An 18k Solid Gold Miniature. An extremely rare 19th c.
Miniature pocket watch: a triumph of precision watchmaking. This watch measures 18mm in diameter and is just over 5mm thick. The case is 18k solid gold, lavishly florally engraved. The inner cover, also 18k gold says J. The back cover of the case is spring activated and can be opened by depressing the button at the top of the watch. The movement is key wind & set. I dont have a key tiny enough to wind/set the watch, and havent been able to get one from the watchmaker due to Covid.
The movement is clean and complete, and the hairspring turns freely. It should run, but may need servicing. The watch appears to be all original and is in excellent, lightly used condition.
There are some very faint scratches on the inner case cover due from the winding key. Jean-François Bautte (22 March 1772 in Geneva 30 November 1837 in Geneva) was a Swiss watchmaker/jeweler famous for several reasons: he founded the most complete watch manufacture of his time.He also created watches & jewelry for famous people and was one of the inventors of the extra-thin watch. His watches and snuffboxes are in museums around the world & regularly appear at auctions like Christie's and Sothebys. This is a gorgeous & rare timepiece. Investment quality to be sure.
