Very nice Louis XIV oignon watch. France, beginning of XVIII century.

Beautiful gilt dial with porcelain cartouches is in quite good condition with minor defects. Big balance bridge is very nice, it's beautifully decorated with birds, chimeras and floral ornament. Gilt case is decorated with arabesques. Watch is signed with CDG Mesnil in Paris. Claude I Du Grand-Mesnil signed his work C.

He was the son of Jacques, master clockmaker at Mer-en-Blaisois and Marie Chabin, first cousin of Etienne I Le Noir. He was first ouvrier libre and received Master on 7th January 1716.

He was an important clockmaker who worked mostly for the marchand-mercier T. Hébert supplying him with movements for the clockcases of André-Charles Boulle, P. Gueinecken, and those decorated by the Martin Brothers. Clocks signed by him were owned by the Duc de Bourbon, the prince de Conti, the duchesse du Maine, and M. Samuel Bernard, Randon de Boisset and Roussel.

His work can be found in museums including Waddesdon Manor, Aylesbury, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York and the château de Versailles, Paris. It seems, that master was mostly clockmaker, and left relatively few watches, probably he made watches in beginning of his career. The watches in this style, was typically made during the reign of Louis XIV, while already in late 1710 - 1720s, in Regency period, the watches looked different, being smaller and having with enamel dials.. Condition Condition is quite nice. Dial is in good condition.

Movement is running in every position, though I don't guarantee time keeping. The case appears to be in good condition.
