Exceptional verge watch - rarely on offer. By Ageron a Paris, ca. Watch diameter: 42 mm, thickness: 20 mm, total length with pedant 54 mm (not including the hinged chain loop). Unusual collectible watch in a solid gold casing with blue enamel back showing a noble mans monogram.

Casing and enamel in good condition for age. Diamond side circle has got a few stones missing. Small solid casing with a high-quality craftsmanship. Quarter Repeater - triggered by the pedant, the hours and quarter hours are struck on the inside of the case not on a bell. Early striking watches were dumb repeaters, which struck the time on the inside of the case producing a muffled sound and could only be detected if the watch was held in the hand, allowing people such as courtiers, amongst whom they were popular, to discreetly check the time in their pocket during tedious levees and royal councils without offending the monarch.

Quiet repeaters also had an important role in determining time at night. During the 1700s-1800s one couldnt just switch on the light.

A quite repeater would allow one to tell the time in the dark without waking the spouse for example. This example produces an audible but rather quiet sound. The strikes can we felt very well if the watch is held in hand. Elegant enamel dial with Roman numerals and Arabic minute markers. Signed Lepine a Paris, winding at two o'clock.

Some age related imperfections are present here and there but the watch is functioning. Overall the watch is in fine condition considering its roughly 250 years old! This is a true collectors item. Original gold winding key is included. Fire-gilded movement with verge escapement via fusee and chain - in working order - manufactured around 1775. Disc for speed regulation in silver.
