Gentleman's Antique original American'Elgin National Watch Co.', high grade 15 jewel pocket watch with beautiful ivory, soft blush pink and gold porcelain dial in a highly polished 9ct carat (tested) rose gold filled (has a lovely soft pink hue and is known in the UK as rolled gold) full hunter Dennison case.Looks to have been much loved and very well cared for - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection!
(Please excuse the reflections/ dark shadows in the pictures - was extremely difficult to photograph). Impressive, distinctive and highly unusual high gloss ivory porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no marks or nibbles and just three extremely tiny (micro) little hairlines showing under eyeglass only to dial edge between the five - 6 position (so small are not showing up in the photographs, do not detract but mentioning for accuracy).
Wonderful soft blush pink centre beautifully surrounded by a slightly raised little gold'flower' and scroll work decoration. Black heavily scrolled Gothic Arabic numbers with black minute markers, black dot 5 minute markers and triangular shaped black 15 minute markers to chapter ring.Numbered to the outer chapter ring with black Arabic numbers (5 - 60) which are all interspersed with slightly raised silver dot markers. Signed clearly in bold, black script; ELGIN with a little slightly raised gold embellishment below. White recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters.
Finely cut, fabulous original fancy gold steel Louis X1V hands and original gold steel arrow tipped seconds hand all in lovely. Original hunter glass (not acrylic) in clear, bright condition and free from any scratches or marks. The highly polished (5cm diameter / 7cm from top of bow to base), 9 carat (tested) rose gold filled original Dennison case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is hefty 111.1 grams), robust and in outstanding condition - absolutely no wear or indentations and few very light and fine little (micro) overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 113 years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish and are free from any inscriptions or initials. Clearly numbered to the inside; 933140.Stamped to the inside of the back cover in arched script; STAR (the'Star' cases where always 9ct gold filled), DENNISON WATCH CASE Co LTD Aaron Lufkin Dennison - one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Co. Who relocated to England to establish the Dennison case factory. They made watch cases for all the leading watch manufacturers of the era including Rolex and Omega and is numbered again; 933140. Carries three old service marks which are all neatly placed just within the inner circumference and two are signed/dated in the same hand (looks like the original owner always liked to take his watch to the same reliable watch repairer); a4332 (4th May 1932) and a4137 (4th January 1937). The inside of the dust cover is clearly stamped; ENGLISH MAKE THIS CASE GUARANTEED TO WEAR 10 YEARS and is numbered again; 933140 28 H - the 28 is the Dennison date numbering system; 1928 (which shows the movement is original to the case - which should always be dated later or the same as the movement, never before) and the H is the first letter of the surname of the Goldsmith at the Dennison factory who pinned the case joints - unfortunately on this occasion I have been unable to identify him. The case number is correctly, partially repeated to the back case curvette and underside of the bezel lip; 3140.
The stem wound and set, high grade American 15 ruby jewelled, 3/4 plate, engine turned lever movement (still retains her original dust movement ring) is in superb bright and clean order and as mentioned above has just been fully checked and serviced. Carries the most wonderful frosted'lace' engine turning to centre with frosted' ribbon' engine turning around the circumference (repeated to the bottom plate - always a sign of quality) with a little engine turned'daisy flower' radiating from the centre wheel pivot and'swirl' engine turning to the mirror finish mainspring and ratchett barrel covers. Has a bi-metal compensated balance wheel with red gold balance screws and two red gold meantime screws (for precision timing), bright blued steel Breguet hairspring which is true,'in the round' and'breathing' well (and has the correct Elgin V to the top coil), large ruby jewels in screwed in sunken chaton settings, ruby pallet jewels, heavily and beautifully engraved (in black enamel) balance cock with Moseley precision regulator (which as mentioned above is sat correctly in the central position) and matching, slightly domed, highly polished steel case screws. Clearly stamped on the top plates in Gothic arched black enamel script; ELGIN NAT'L.15 JEWELS SAFETY PINION and is numbered (again in black enamel); 13821250. This number is correctly, partially repeated to the underside of both the top plate and balance cock; 821250 and to the bottom plate (under the dial); OOM 21250. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action. Winds extremely smoothly and fully do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!
Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely large original un-worn rose gold filled'onion' crown. Good original slightly worn Dennison rose gold filled safety bow (tiny bit of wear showing under eyeglass to top underside from being carried on a watch chain over the years) which is stamped to one side; DQ - Dennison Quality. A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Antique American full hunter timepiece which as mentioned above was much loved and very well cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
