IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR INTERNATIONAL BUYERS. SEVERAL SALES HAVE BEEN CANCELLED RECENTLY DUE TO BUYERS NOT REALISING HOW MUCH EXTRA THEY MAY HAVE TO PAY. Antique Illinois open face gold filled pocket watch recently serviced. The watch is 45mm or 1.75 in dia approx not including the crown or bow.

This is a little smaller than the normal 16 size, but ideal for slim fitting clothes, or a ladies handbag. A service is a complete strip down of the movement, ultrasonically cleaned and rinsed, all parts are inspected for wear or damage and repaired or replaced if needed. The jewels are cleaned out with peg wood and the balance staff pivots are lightly polished.

The main spring is removed cleaned and oiled, if worn or set it will be replaced, if this is so it will be stated. The watch is then reassembled and oiled. The movement is 17 jewels so it is fully. Jewelled, on the movement it says Adjusted, it is adjusted to 3 positions, also it says Sterling Illinois watch co Springfield, double roller. Running with a true and flat balance motion, with good amplitude in all positions and is keeping excellent time.

Please note a mechanical watch will not keep time as a quartz watch will. The balance is a split rim bi-metallic compensating balance with a Breguet style blued over coil hairspring with screwed in balance weights and mean time adjusting screws in the balance arms, the jewel mounts are screw set. With the centre wheel being in gold, this was a feature of Illinois, they sometimes made the whole gear train in gold. Features a polished steel escape wheel and a double roller table. All the signs of a high grade movement.

The movement is of the open bridge style, it is nickel finished with. To the bridge plates and bright steel crown and ratchet wheels, and a whip spring style regulator for fine micro adjustment of the regulator, which is in the central position, leaving plenty of room for adjustment.

The inlay paint is in a red colour and is intact. The dial is a metal dial single sunk at the six o'clock position with Illinois Sterling written in block letters, it has Arabic numerals with a minute track in the outer chapter and is in very good condition. The hands are a matched set all three are pierced, in blued steel, in excellent. This is a triple signed watch, a very rare thing, meaning that the dial is signed by the maker, as is the movement, also the case. There are some initials on the rear, JAP, they are.

The case has been ultrasonically cleaned but not polished, so that you can see the true condition of it. A very nice case in.

The crystal is new it is a raised bevelled edge mineral glass. This is an unusual watch not often seen for sale and a bit different to the run of the mill. Illinois were noted for high grade railroad watches in America, until they were taken over by Hamilton. You won't be disappointed with this watch.
